In variety of animals and species Colombia is the richest country. Also most endangered species in Colombia occur because Colombia is the country full of illegal traders. Body parts of animals have greater cost than any other drugs. Illegal traders kill the animals and sale them into market and earn huge money. They don’t care about which animal is in danger of extinction.

Mountain Tapir

Tapirus pinchaque is the scientific name belongs to Mammalia class and Tapiridae family. They can be found in cloud forests and mountains in Colombia. Included in the list of endangered species around the world due to lack of their population. They communicate with their group members with whistles. They can live around 27 to 30 years in captivity. Their mating season start from the starting of rainy season. Their gestation period is about 13 months.

Mothers care for their new born baby around 18 months. At the age of three year they got sexual maturity. New born baby can be weigh around 5.4 to 6.2 kg. Adult tapir are 5.9ft in size and having weight around 150 to 250kg.

Listed as endangered species in Colombia due to decline in population from last three generations. One generation length is 11 year. Population trend is still decreasing only 2500 individuals are remaining on our planet. Hunting and habitat fragmentation are major threats that decline population for this species.

Baird tapir

Tapirus bairdii is the scientific name belongs to Mammalia class and Tapiridae family. Known as most endangered species. They can be found in forested areas 3,620 up from sea level. They feed on fallen fruits and leaves. Having 198 to 202 cm in length and 240 to 400 kg in weight. Mating done in the start of rainy season. Their gestation period is about 400 days. They can live up to 25 to 30 years. Their generation length is 11 years.

Classified as endangered animal in Colombia due to continuous loss in habitat. Major threats are local hunting, illegal body parts trading and habitat destruction. Illegal traders also sale this species as pets. Hunting also done to get food from them.

Conservation steps education, awareness, law, land and water management are taking but still their population trend is decreasing. Most endangered species in Colombia because 50% of their population has been killed. From 1965 to 1996 they were vulnerable in IUCN red list but in 2002 they included in endangered species list.

Galápagos Sea Lion

Zalophus wollebaeki is the scientific name belongs to Mammalia class and Otariidae family. They can be found in all major islands and small rocks in Galápagos. Males are larger in size than females. Males and females are 200 to 250cm and 150 to 200cm respectively in size. Males and females have weigh 200 to 400kg and 50 to 110 kg respectively. They got maturity 4 to 5 years can live around 15 to 24 years.

Their generation length is 10 years and estimated occurrence is 10672km2. Upper elevation limit is 5 meters and lower depth limit is 584 meters. Their area of occupancy is now constant not decreasing. But population trend is still declining of this species. They are listed as endangered species list in Colombia in 2008 according to IUCN red list.

Pollution, climate change are the most dangerous threats declining their population badly. During 1978 to 2001 they decline their population more than 60%. At this time due to lack of evidences about their population trend we can estimate they loss their 50% population. This is also the major reason to add them in endangered species in Colombia list.
